What is advertising?
In the world of advertising, someone may think that all it takes is a catchy phrase to get someone’s attention. However, the real art of advertising is not how many people see it, but if they like what they see. Meaning a consumer sees an ad and will think of the product again. There is a science to creating an advertisement when trying to reach an online audience. Trial and error plays a big part in the beginning. Picking an audience, budgeting, choosing words and images, narrowing interests and making an ad that produces results.
How does it relate to PR?
A powerful sales message is needed to target people with a goal that the message will get across. Advertising is a very specialized field and knowing people is the key. Therefore, to know people is to work with them and recognize how they act and think. This is just like public relations; analyzing people and creating relationships with them. Advertising analyzes people and creates ads for them. Recently, The Irish Academy has been testing Facebook ads to reach more students for the upcoming courses.
How does The Irish Academy advertise?
There are six courses in The Irish Academy, which creates six topics to work with for advertising. Starting with the basics, our team started with ad purpose; getting more students. After, a target audience, budget, image, text, and time were established until it became a complete ad. There were two ads to begin with; a general ad was created along and a public relations/print journalism courses ad. Both had similar target audiences and had the same platforms and budget. The only difference was the text and images that consumers saw when the ad was shown.
After running the two ads and analyzing the results, the images were redone along with text and social media platforms. The steps were done repeatedly and had different results to show what does and does not work. Social media is very present daily life. Although most people are savvy using it, advertising on social media is a real skill. Therefore, success of selling to individuals in a population does not happen overnight. To be an expert in advertising, you need to know people. Public Relations will be the key to step up in a fast-paced world and get your head in the game.
